江戸時代くらいの本棚、だろうか。今、ちょうどHenry Petroskiの”The Book on the BOOK”（邦訳『本棚の歴史』）という本を読んでるところなので、この写真を見るといろいろと考えてしまう。和書における製本方法（和綴）では今の書籍でいうところの本の背(spine)が固くならないので、現在のように本を縦にして、背表紙が前面に位置するように配置する構造にはならず、写真のように本を水平に積み重ねていくやり方が採用された、のだろうな。たぶん。
